THIS week BANO visited one of Hiphop artist that has made a difference through his Kalanga songs. Questions have been rolling on some artists and fans on how Slimtee became successful on hipop in a Kalanga language.
Plumtree has beeen known for it’s rhumba type of music. Many popular bands like ‘Ndolwane super sounds, Allen Ndoda, Clement Magwaza and Chase Skhuza are known for their Kalanga songs. Slimtee believes his aim is to make Hiphop reach every society.
‘Tyza Slimtee’ whos real name is Praise K Muleya is a 22 year old man who is a Musician, songwriter, music producer, actor and a director based in Khumalo suburbs. He believes Hiphop is not only a genre but a culture on it’s own. Most hiphop artists use English, Shona and Ndebele ‘kasi rap’ ,for them to be much successful on their musical career, but for Tyza it’s different as he chose to take Hiphop in Kalanga.
In an interview with BANO Tyza told the paper that ever since he was young he always had an interest in music and later discovered that he has that talent that he has to give out to people. Tyza became known for his breakthrough song which he released in 2018 titled ‘Butjilo’ produced by Murphy Cubic. “The song made me known around Bulawayo and Plumtree where Kalanga is largely spoken so they understand the song better. Zbc tv, Skyzmetro and Khulumani fm once interviewed me all thanks to the best producer in Bulawayo Murphy Cubic” ,said Slimtee.
During his first days as a musician,Slimtee faced challenges as most of his fans in Bulawayo failed to understand the song because he used Kalanga. In Plumtree it was a different case as most people could relate. The musician has been off the mic since 2020 due to lockdown, but he is currently working on three single tracks featuring three artists from Plumtree and one artist from South Africa, which is to be released any time after March. “I once also featured some Bulawayo artists such as Rava, King Lucoz, Lungzman, Tizzy Scott, Redbee and Elvantoffy. Then in Plumtree had featured Albert Nyagumbo, Nelisiwe Nleya, Huddy and Nonhlanhla Dube on the song ‘Dzila kobhuzwiwa njiba” ,he added . Tyza also shared stage with Hounarable Dj Phuthi at Lusvingo festival in 2019.
